Essay / Media and metaphor regarding the rose of England - 1453
Countries are known for what they particularly represent. Some might also be known for those who represent the nation itself. For the country of England, Lady Diana Frances Spencer was widely known for her constant engagement in the social issues of the kingdom. She was a children's activist and was very popular in the media due to society's fascination with English royalty. Princess Diana used this to her advantage and "she devoted herself to her sons [Prince William and Prince Harry] and to charitable efforts such as combating the use of landmines" (Diana, 2014) . Her life in the mainstream media helped her to be heard beyond the borders of England and she became an icon around the world for her composure and sense of connection with middle-society people. . With her marriage to Prince Charles of England, every aspect of her life was broadcast and the pressures consumed her. She then decided to pursue her own advocacy interests. “Diana supported many charities and worked to help the homeless, people living with HIV and AIDS, and children in need” (Diana, 2014). Her work with charities for children and people with AIDS helped create a friendship between her and Sir Elton John. Elton John was very active within the English royal family and in the charities organized by Prince Charles, such as the annual charity concerts. Over the years, the friendship between Princess Diana and Elton John has grown stronger. Then on August 31, 1997, Diana died following a car accident in Paris, France. This devastation hit the world and many mourned with the royal family their terrible loss. Elton John was heartbroken to learn of the death of one of his great friends.
