    From 1754 to 1763, Britain fought the French and Indian War. Even though Britain had won the war, it still had many war debts to repay. Britain turned to the colonies to repay their debts by taxing them. The taxes angered the colonists because they believed it violated their rights. Benjamin Franklin originally proposed the Albany Union Plan to unite the colonies, but this law was rejected by all colonial governments. Only after all the British laws and taxes did the colonies come together and write the Declaration of Independence. One of the British actions that angered the colonists was the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was passed in response to settlers' complaints about the Sugar Act. The Stamp Act, according to the table in Document 1, required settlers to purchase a stamp and place it on all their paper products.
