Prejudice is defined as an opinion formed without taking the time and care to judge fairly. In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, several themes are presented such as courage, prejudice, and growing up. The main theme of this novel, however, is prejudice. In the book, it is not just a case of black and white, but the entire novel is about prejudice in many forms, including class and racial prejudice. Throughout the story, we see all of these events through the eyes of a young girl named Scout. In the story, Scout's father, Atticus, says to Jem and Scout, "I'd rather you shoot cans in the backyard, but I know you'll chase the birds." Shoot all the blue jays you want if you can hit them, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird" (Lee 90). In this quote, the mockingbird introduces the characters Tom and Boo because they don't have their own song. A mockingbird doesn't sing its own song.
