Essay / American Identity and the Role of the Foreigner in the American Nation and Other Nations
The topic of discussion for this section of the course was primarily American Identity and the Role of the Foreigner in our nation and in other nations. It's an interesting topic of discussion to think about what makes someone an American, whether they're a citizen or not. There are several traits that make “an American” according to the authors and thoughtful thinkers in the classroom. Say no to plagiarism. There is an American flag in every room and the Pledge of Allegiance is taken at the start of each school day. From a young age, our children are taught to revere the flag and be patriotic to their country. This is used as a form of assimilation for young Americans. Unfortunately, the story we are made to believe as children is a bit biased. He under-exaggerates the difficult times in our history and exaggerates the good parts. For example, I remember hearing about the first Thanksgiving when I was very young. When we imagine this, we imagine the Pilgrims and Native Americans sitting around a big, happy table, eating turkey and being friendly to each other. For those of us who actually know the events surrounding the first Thanksgiving, we know that this "happy dinner" would have brought together Native Americans infected with smallpox and Pilgrims stealing their land (that's right, no turkey). Another topic of discussion is how foreigners are treated in our country and in other countries. Immigrants are sometimes seen as a problem to be solved, even though many important members of American society were immigrants. An example is Eddie Van Halen. Edward left the Netherlands with his family during his childhood and brought our nation incredible music and many wonderful concerts filled with joyful rock and roll. This is a rather silly example, but the idea is that immigrants have a lot to add to our society and that our culture is the way it is because of our immigrants. Keep in mind: this is just a sample.
