Essay / The Effects of the Vietnam War on America - 774
The Vietnam War had horrible effects on the country as a whole. Most people did not agree with the war and even went so far as to be violent towards the soldiers when they returned. Many protested and avoided the draft, some even burning their draft cards. The country really hated this war. Many soldiers returned with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Statically, about half the soldiers came back with it (ptsd.ne.gov/what-is-ptsd.html). They suffered extreme flashbacks to the things they had to do and the things they saw, this personally tormented my great uncle his entire life. This often made them distant and they found it difficult to communicate with people in their country once they returned. Agent Orange was a chemical herbicide widely used during the Vietnam War. Many veterinarians have suffered serious illnesses from Agent Orange. Some of the diseases caused by it are diabetes, leukemia, heart disease, Parkinson's disease, and respiratory cancers (publichealth.va.gov/PUBLICHEALTH/exposures/agentorange/conditions/index.asp). These are just a few of the illnesses it was known to cause, the list of them is long and this chemical has thus caused the premature deaths of many soldiers, even outside of the battlefield. There was a lot of civil unrest. during the war because of the number of people who were against the war. One of the many ways in which civilians demonstrated their dislike of the war was through protest. On May 2, 1964, 1,000 students gathered in front of the UN building in New York to denounce the country's "imperialist" policies. . They chanted things like “we will not go” and pointed out places where they refused to serve in the army (Dougan, 72). They also protested live...... in the middle of the newspaper..... .we should have minded our own business, my great uncle would still be alive without this war and so many others too and it's a shame they had to die for such a pointless and pointless war. I'm glad it made America think twice about getting involved in other countries' feuds now, but that's about all I'm happy about, well, that and the music because, man, this music is killer music.
