A phobia is an irrational fear, although some say it is not irrational to fear Muslims. Although Islamophobia is believed to have affected people after 9/11, the term was created in the 1980s. There are four types of Islamophobia. First there is discrimination against Muslims because of their beliefs and values. The second is called post-reflexive personal Islamophobic discrimination, which is when people believe that the ideals of Islam are inferior to those of the West. Third, institutional Islamophobia occurs in social situations where people intentionally ignore the beliefs of Islamic and/or Muslim people. Finally, there is political Islamophobia, where politicians use it to their advantage to gain popularity. The cause of Islamophobia could be attributed to many factors like 9/11, our own personal beliefs, and other beliefs imposed on us. But the main cause is undoubtedly the media. I think it would be a good idea to exercise caution when dealing with a suspected terrorist in a non-violent manner and always be aware of our surroundings. It's never a good idea to take matters into your own hands by verbally or physically attacking someone you think is suspicious. The right thing to do would be to alert the authorities of anything that seems suspicious. But we should not say that someone is a terrorist simply because of their religion or ethnicity.
