Animals have been constant companions, workers, and protectors alongside humans for as long as anyone can remember. Horses help with transportation, cats help keep mice out of the house, and dogs help herd livestock. However, the bond that can develop between four-legged animals and humans can be even more valuable than just helping them get the job done. A soldier returning from war or a child afraid of making friends can find comfort and warmth in the special bond developed with animals through animal-assisted therapy. Animal-assisted therapy is a therapeutic program that involves the use of trained animals as a form of treatment to improve an individual's physical, emotional and social well-being, thereby improving self-esteem, reducing anxiety and facilitating healing (source 1). Animal-assisted therapy was first introduced in 1792 at a psychiatric institute in England. From then on, many other institutes started experimenting with the therapy program to help treat certain disorders and in rehabilitation programs like some institutes. It was first introduced into programs in the United States in 1944 and since then it has gained popularity as an effective means of aiding treatment (PDF 2). However, even with growing popularity, little research has been conducted to conclusively confirm the measurable results and benefits of animal-assisted therapy. Thanks to the research that has been conducted, animal-assisted therapy is so far considered a reasonable and beneficial treatment option. In addition to helping soldiers recover from post-traumatic stress and helping children become more confident, animal assistance therapy also helps treat various other health conditions and mental disorders. Research has shown that owning a pet is beneficial for both the animal and its owner. According to research, pet ownership is linked to cardiovascular health, a strengthened immune system, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels (PDF 3). Studies have also shown that constant pet care reduces anxiety. By directing attention outward and having patients focus on the animals, anxiety, depression, pain, and anger can be alleviated.References:1.
