  • Essay / Ted Kaczynski: The Unabomber - 889

Ted Kaczynski: The UnabomberOver the years, many criminals have evaded authorities, but very few have been able to avoid them as long as the infamous Unabomber. For 17 years, the Unabomer was able to wreak havoc without being caught. In 1978, the Unabomber began dropping his bombs. It was only after 17 years of searching that the Unabomber was arrested and charged for his crimes. Theodore (Ted) Kaczynski was arrested in April 1996 after investigators searched his small 10 x 12 foot cabin in the woods of Lincoln, Montana. Ted built the cabin in 1971 and lived there alone, his nearest neighbor being 1/4 mile away. The cabin had no running water, electricity, or plumbing. Ted's family knew something was wrong with him since he was a baby. His mother said he had strange mistakes as a child where he would stay silent and still. As he grew older, the “stops” (as his family called them) began to be accompanied by rage. He never fit in with someone his age. For example, when Ted was 10 years old, his father tried to take him to a Boy Scout meeting, but Ted wanted nothing to do with the other kids, so his father gave up. The only thing Ted liked to do was read and play the trombone. Ted proved to be very intelligent and, at the age of 15, received a scholarship to study Greek tragedy for the summer at the University of Chicago. Ted went to Harvard and earned a degree in mathematics when he was 20 years old. Ted was then offered a permanent job at the University of California and taught there until his abrupt resignation in 1969. His family was unaware of his resignation until he showed up at his parents to move in. Ted stayed with his parents for two years. years and during this time he worked many low-paying jobs, the first being a gardener at the local mall. In 1971, Ted's parents woke up to find Ted gone and only a note thanking them for letting him stay with them. The note was so short and specific that his father thought he was about to commit suicide. Ted's life was far from over..
