  • Essay / Technology in Headrick's Power Over People - 984

As we progressed through the Modern World course, students were able to see various impacts of how technology has improved or deteriorated a civilization or a nation. One of the key readings for the course was Headrick's book, Power over Peoples. It's important to examine Headrick's work and see exactly what his title, Power Over People, means. From what the students have gathered, this means using technology as a means to gain advantage over another civilization, and therefore using your power or technology to dominate another group of people. Additionally, it is important to note what is meant by the term “technology”. According to Headrick, technology encompasses "the range of ways in which humans use materials and energy in the environment for their own purposes, beyond what they can do with their bodies." From this definition we can deduce that technology is the ability to manipulate other things in our environment. It is also important to note that generally with greater technological power; we can take control of others. For example, Headrick gives the example of Europeans during the colonial era. More recently; However, Headricks' view can be seen in a somewhat different way. Although superior technology may initially give a group an advantage, there is also a “window of opportunity” with technology. Air power is an example. When air power began, it was unstoppable in traditional combat, but as time progressed, the powerful aircraft became less effective when faced with new tactics and asymmetric warfare like what happened in Vietnam. As we move forward to 1999, time brings another dilemma where the higher power uses technology, but this time there were both positives and negatives based on paper diversity and expansion . History has proven this time and time again. One of the reasons the European empire was so successful was due to its great advancements in technology. But what you need to keep in mind is that this technology involves the time factor. Over time, technology can advance, but also, people find ways around that technology or the technology fails you. For example, in Vietnam, air power failed due to adaptation. Just as in Kosovo, the technological use of air power failed due to other circumstances. As the Serbs were driven out of Kosovo, killings increased and fighting increased due to people's frustrations and their willingness to fight for what they believe in. Therefore, although technology can gain a great advantage over your opponents, it can never replace will and desire. for a nation to achieve its goals and over time this technology may fail.
