  • Essay / Salem Witches and Ergot - 680

While searching for texts written about the Salem witch trials, I found a few authors who published articles and books about the Salem witch trials. These authors have often shown that the most probable cause of the victims' seizures was caused by ergot. However, I haven't found much discussion of another major source of seizures: witchcraft. My goal in this article is to produce a convincing argument that the victims of the Salem witch trials who experienced strange behavior came from ergot rather than witchcraft. To achieve this goal, I have organized my article into four main sections. In the first section, I recount what happened during the Salem witch trials of the 17th century. In the second section I explain what happens when ergot exists in a human and the effects it has on humans. The third section includes an explanation of what community rye was during the Salem witch era and what it did to each victim. The fourth section concludes the article.
