Nanoscale materials have been used for over a millennium, such as at Medival in Europe where nanoscale gold was used in stained glass windows and in Damacus where nanotubes were found in sword blades (National Nanotechnology Initiative, nd). However, Richard Feynman (Figure 1) of the California Institute of Technology gave what is considered the first-ever lecture, "There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom," on technology and engineering at the atomic scale, at 'a meeting of the American Physical Society at Caltech (nd). Feyman said in his talk that “when we get to a very, very small world – say circuits of seven atoms – we have a lot of new things that would happen that represent completely new opportunities for design” (Grandall et) . Lewis, 1992). Later in 1974, the term "nanotechnology" was given to describe the precision machining of materials at the atomic scale by Professor Norio Taniguchi of the Tokyo University of Science (National Nanotechnology Initiative, n.d.). The medical use of Feynman's theoretical micromachines was suggested to him by one of his doctoral students, Albert Hibbs, who suggested that some repair machines could one day be reduced in size to the point that it would be theoretically possible "to swallow the doctor” (Discovery). , nd) Since the 1980s, medicine has seen an exciting shift toward the use of minimally invasive procedures due to the many benefits of nanobot technology.
