  • Essay / Quantitative review of the article - 887

The aim of the article I reviewed by Lykeridou, Gourounti, Deltsidou, Lautradis et& Vaslamatzis (2009) was to examine the level of depression, perceived anxiety and general stress related to women's infertility while receiving fertility treatments. It was hypothesized that the etiology of an infertility diagnosis would affect a woman's psychological vulnerability. The variables examined in the study were infertility diagnoses and psychological disorders. The levels of infertility diagnoses used in the research were male infertility, female infertility, mixed and idiopathic infertility. Different levels of psychological disorders included depression, perceived anxiety, and general fertility-related stress. The type of research used in the study was a cross-sectional survey. Over a period of 11 months, data from three different questionnaires were collected from participants. Before each woman received her first treatment, she received a letter explaining the aim and purpose of the research. If a woman expressed interest, the research team met with her to explain the study further and ask if she needed clarification on any of the details of the study. A researcher unaffiliated with the fertility clinic then collected the participants' questionnaires after all necessary instructions were clarified with the participants. The sample was obtained through convenience sampling consisting of 404 women with a mean age of 36.9 years who had to meet a specific set of requirements in order to be considered for participation in the study. These participants were approached at a large infertility clinic and asked if they wanted to participate...... middle of article....... Without knowledge of the reliability and validity of These two instruments, we are unable to know whether the instruments are consistent or whether they measure what they intend to measure. I think the author's conclusions were justified given the study design. Using the results obtained from this study, counselors can determine how best to help clients facing various types of infertility issues. As the study results revealed that the etiology of infertility could be correlated with the type of stress experienced by the client.
