    The 1920s illustrate a new era of wealth, prosperity and change. The 1920s were a time of social change, cultural conflict, and political change. New lifestyles, including the flapper lifestyle, played an important role in shaping the new generation. Machines and inventions created more free time, while higher wages were the result of growing prosperity. However, this prosperity brought inconvenience and corruption. For example, alcohol was banned in the 1920s. Many of those who opposed this law went to speakeasies, illegal bars selling alcohol. The Teapot Dome scandal, in which Albert Bacon Fall decided to lease his lands controlled as Supervisor of Naval Oil Reserve Lands for millions of dollars, led to a loss of confidence in government. Purchasing items on credit was a novelty in the 1920s. Although it didn't seem like a big deal at the time, it turned out to be a major cause of the start of the Great Depression, another of the biggest failures of the decade. The 1920s were the first decades to have a nickname, called "The Roaring Twenties" or "The Jazz Age." This demonstrated the wealth, prosperity, and cultural differences that the 1920s contained. The Jazz Age included many artifacts, such as the following. The Red Scare was a movement in which the government attempted to eliminate communism. The Harlem Renaissance was a time when black people came together and created jazz and art that was popular in “mainstream” culture. The Flapper was a new female lifestyle in which women stayed out of the home, drank, smoked, partied, and did anything that was socially unacceptable for a woman before World War I.
