    Estelle Getty has had an incredible career as a mother and performer. Estelle was born on July 25, 1923, as Estelle Scher, to Charles and Sarah, two Jewish immigrants. She began her life in New York where she grew up on the Upper East Side (biography.com). She had two siblings, one named David and the other Rosilyn. On December 24, 1947, she married Arthur Gettleman. Together they had two children named Barry and Carl. When Estelle's career began to pick up, she adopted the stage name Estelle Getty and dropped her last name Estelle Scheer–Gettleman. She had a steady acting career on stage and screen until 2000, when she retired due to health reasons. Doctors initially thought it might be dementia, but he was eventually diagnosed with Lewy body dementia. Estelle died three days before her 85th birthday (died July 22, 2008). However, she died in the company of her loved ones and caregivers. Estelle Getty had an incredible impact on those she worked with, the roles she played, and the way I truly stand today. Estelle started in Yiddish theaters then tried stand-up in the Catskills in Upper New York. She trained under Gerald Russak before joining the Berghoff studio in 1943. Her professional debut was in The Divorce of Judy and Jane. She also had some small roles in TV shows such as Fantasy Island and Baker's Dozen. But in her career, I believe she had the greatest influence on Harvey Fierstein.
