First, perhaps no book has better connected animals to their human counterparts than Animal Farm. Orwell's Beasts serve as representations of important figures from World War II and beyond. For example, Karl Marx, the inventor of the communist movement, was represented by Old Major, the most important animal on the farm until his death. Like Old Major, Marx was a visionary who dreamed of equality. Old Major declares: “Is it not clear, comrades, that all the evils of our lives come from the tyranny of human beings? Just get rid of the man, and the product of our labor will be ours. Overnight we could become rich and free. So what should we do? Why, work night and day, body and soul, for the overthrow of the human race! This is my message to you, comrades: Rebellion! » (Orwell, Animal Farm!), 30). Additionally, he inspired the Russian Social Democratic Ruling Party, led by his rivals Joseph Stalin and Leon Trostky. Napoleon is represented by Joseph Stalin and just like him, he builds loyalties within the communist party (pigs and dogs) in order to be able to overthrow Snowball (Trostky). Snowball exhibits similar traits to Trotsky in that they both fight bravely in their respective battles. Trotsky played an important role in victory in the Russian Civil War, with Snowball displaying bravery during the Battle of the Cowshed. The executed chickens, geese and sheep are a representation of the millions who opposed Stalin and were thus killed and banished. Chickens and geese are not known for their docile nature and are perfect rebels.
