  • Essay / Analyze active listening skills. - 1118

Counseling theories, listening skills sessions, provided the opportunity to learn and practice the practical application of listening skills. These skills involved actively listening to the speaker and asking questions. The knowledge acquired throughout the counseling theories module was applied during these practical sessions. Although students participating in these listening sessions were expected to work within a simulated therapy session, it was made clear that these exercises did not provide the training necessary for students to become professional counselors. However, this is not to say that these practices have not been useful. We had the opportunity to gain a better and newer understanding of the topic by practicing our listening skills and completing these hands-on exercises. As we assumed the role of an active listener, it was important to demonstrate a deeper understanding of both positive and negative characteristics that the speaker faced in the speaker-listener interaction. It was important that the listener made the speaker feel comfortable with what they were saying and that active feedback was provided to the speaker. As I began the active listening sessions, it was clear to me that I needed to give my full attention to the speaker. A good listener will focus their attention in a way that they can easily pick up on nonverbal cues (McKay, 2011). As I listened to the speaker, I did my best to pay close attention to his body language, the tone of his voice, and the way he spoke. I maintained direct eye contact with the speaker during each listening session. At no time did I have difficulty focusing on the speaker or dealing with distracting thoughts running through my...... middle of paper ......n, is to provide thoughts and tactfully mirrors to encourage them to open up more. It is important to always keep an open mind, be welcoming, maintain an open posture and treat the speaker with the utmost respect.
