Essay / Stem cell research: should we let it continue?
On May 1, 2014, cardiologist Dr James Chong of Westmead Hospital made a remarkable discovery. He took human stem cells and transplanted them into a group of monkeys with damaged hearts and found that three months later the heart tissue had “regenerated up to 40%” (Milman 1). Therefore, Dr. Chong came to the conclusion that it was possible to go the other way. He claims that stem cells from monkeys could soon regenerate damaged human hearts. Without the funding provided by the government, Dr. Chung and many other scientists would not have been able to achieve such breakthroughs in stem cell research. By continuing the stem cell research fund, people around would be cured not only from heart damage, but also from other diseases such as cancer, polio, asthma, HIV/AIDS, etc. Alexander A. Maximow is the scientist most recognized for naming stem cells (Who Discovered 1). Dr. Maximow was not only a scientist, but also a physician and a biologist (Who Discovered 1). On February 1, 1961, Dr. James Till and Dr. Ernest McCulloch of the OCI Institute accidentally discovered the presence of stem cells during radiation research (Stem Cell Research Timeline 1). Scientists who theorized the idea of stem cells had appeared long before, but there was no suitable technology to study these cells in depth. Although it was just the beginning, stem cell research progressed quite quickly. Despite the rapid discoveries, numerous abuses, such as Congress's ban on fetal tissue research on July 12, 1974, had only slightly slowed research (Stem Cell Research Timeline 1). Just 14 years later, the "Research Panel on Human Fetal Tissue Transplantation reopens the issue and votes 18-3 to approve... middle of document... ogist regrows monkey hearts with human stem cells.
