  • Essay / Personal Statement in Dentistry - 842

Being a first-generation college student, Hispanic woman from a low-income family, I know firsthand how little expectations and support there are for minorities . I knew I couldn't afford to go to college, so I applied to a non-extracurricular, college-focused high school, which gave me the opportunity to graduate from high school as well as an associate degree. My typical day consisted of going to high school and community college in the afternoons and evenings volunteering or playing violin at my local church. After graduating with an Associate of Science degree with honors, I packed my bags and violin case to attend St. Mary's University, which had an excellent pre-dental program. I have been fortunate to have amazing mentors and a great support system in my life. For this reason, I became a mentor for the Biology Living Learning Community to bring diversity by teaching science, supporting and sparking interest in STEM jobs among first-year students as well as the community of San Antonio. I may not have reached my goal yet, but I will always want to help others achieve it.
