Young learning minds should be given as much time as possible to learn. Because standardized tests take up unnecessary classroom time, children suffer. Teachers also struggle to rush and teach lessons that should be more spread out. The standardized testing schedule affects the entire school experience, perhaps for days or even weeks at a time. To compensate for this schedule change, material is not taught in the most efficient way possible, which would include giving teachers as much time as possible to review this material. According to Gilchrist (2015) “The average student will take approximately 112 standardized tests during their school career” (para. 1). 112 tests is a lot of tests and all that time is spent outside of the classroom. Ross states (2015), “The average student in the average school will spend approximately 19.8 hours on testing over the course of a school year” (p. 6). Too much time is spent on standardized tests. By testing children's ability to understand on tests, it takes away from classroom time that could be used to teach them to understand. Testing children only robs them of their valuable classroom time. Standardized tests are a waste of valuable classroom time and should be reduced or
