In a healthcare environment, risk management focuses on threats or harmful situations through identification, analysis, reduction and prevention. Quality improvement focuses on performance and ways to improve that performance based on standards, which are constantly reviewed and improved. Both are essential in any healthcare situation. The two programs work cooperatively to provide a safe environment and high-quality patient care. Good leadership, fostering a culture of change and safety, teamwork are essential to the implementation of quality improvement and risk management in the organization. Leaders and the governing body must demonstrate commitment to the processes and set expectations for all stakeholders. The leadership team must ensure that the team's attention is focused on the organization's core business of providing care and treating patients in a safe, high-quality clinical environment. There are different tools that can be used for quality improvement and which also apply to the analysis of risk issues. These are quality measures, benchmarking, RCA, FMEA, etc..
