  • Essay / Heroes and Monsters in Robert Louis Stevenson The...

Heroes and Monsters - Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde The theme is Heroes and Monsters. Doctor Jekyll qualifies for both titles. A hero is someone who is seen as a person who rises to an occasion that others fear. Also, a person does not need to be a hero to a large number of people, being a hero to a fairly important person. A monster is considered the hero's enemy. The word monster can refer to a number of things, but the main definition is something or someone who is evil and has no remorse for their actions. Doctor Jekyll falls into the category of hero because of his struggle to get rid of the evil that lies dormant in man. He does this by inventing a potion that will destroy the evil in the mind and body in order to make a perfect and righteous human. Doctor Jekyll has a great cause in his fight because he has experienced this evil firsthand. Because no one knows his plan, he is only a hero to himself for the moment. Doctor Jekyll is also considered a monster. When Jekyll takes his potion, evil takes over his body and his entire personality changes. He goes from being a hero to being a monster. He starts hurting people and causing trouble. The worst part is that he even enjoys his transformation and has no pity or remorse even though he knows what he is doing is wrong. For example, he starts a riot in a bar and he laughs about it like it's a joke. When he starts having Ivy living with him, he does much bigger damage than he did in the bar. He not only hurts her physically but also mentally. He makes Ivy believe that he will counteract everything she does wrong in an atrocious way. Ivy is afraid to leave the house when he's gone and she's afraid to tell her friends about him. The end result was his death. The difference between the two sides of Doctor Jekyll is mainly that one is evil and the other is good. While Beatrice is gone and Jekyll stays with Ivy in Hyde, he remains Hyde for a long time. It's because being Hyde becomes like a drug for him. He likes to be naughty. Near the end, as he goes to his wedding party, Jekyll thinks that he and the people around him are safe because he swears never to drink the potion. He doesn't know that the evil has taken over his body and can take over as soon as he feels the slightest emotion. Ultimately, he tried to protect the people he loved by telling them they couldn't see him anymore. Then he transformed them and almost killed them. Once his friend realized what he was, he knew he had to help Doctor Jekyll. When Hyde was about to attack him, the friend knew he had to kill him. Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde were now dead.
