I didn't drink and I didn't know anyone who did. Or so I assured myself, as I listened to the warnings in health class, the teachers begging me and my fellow teenagers to avoid alcohol and its harms, the message was obviously lost to us because the class was bored but building in excitement. At the end of the presentation, they are clamoring for a chance to use the “drunk goggles,” laughing, completely oblivious to the painful reality we had been warned about. These delinquents, whatever their age, are perpetual adolescents; stuck in this selfish, self-centered mindset and they can't understand what damage they can cause by piloting a thousand pound piece of metal through an unsuspecting audience. Even afterwards, they refuse to acknowledge the terrible ramifications of their actions. I saw an acquaintance absolutely stunned by how seriously the police took her route home from the bar a little drunk. The nerve! The police didn't understand how inconvenient it was for him, the legal costs and the high fines! They didn't understand that he was an excellent driver and they spoiled his fun. Mom was playing music softly in the front to keep her awake at 2am while everyone else was trying to sleep at 2am, Dad was slumped in the front seat resting before his shift later in the morning. Shannon and Kirsten were seated in the second row. slumped to the side, sighing softly as we drove. In the backseat, Effie's head rested against the window glass, barely recognizable with a blanket wrapped around her like a cape. Emily rested her head on Effie's shoulder, I slept in a fitful sleep, watching my sisters and parents, looking out the window at the dark, quiet highways of Texas. I couldn't wait to go home and sleep after twenty.?
