  • Essay / Autonomous Vehicles Essay - 1231

In 2011, nearly 30,000 people lost their lives in car accidents in the United States. Even though the numbers decrease each year, they remain above 82 people per day. This number is equivalent to one large plane crashing every three days, but people largely use and rely on cars every day. Additionally, traditional traffic light control leads to delays, traffic jams, unnecessary fuel costs and pollution. Technological advancements made over the past twenty years have impacted our lives in many ways. These advances have been made in every aspect of our lives, including how we move. Having efficient transportation is essential to human development, which means that an intelligent transportation system is the key to progress. An accelerated aspect of ITS is the development of autonomous vehicles. Drivers are the cause of most accidents, for example due to drowsiness, driving under the influence or inattention. Intelligent vehicles support drivers in ordinary driving situations by means of warnings (e.g. lane departure warning) or by performing certain tasks (e.g. cruise control). Autonomous vehicles go even further by minimizing human influence and thus increasing driving safety. Autonomous vehicles will be able to transport humans more safely and efficiently. In order to accomplish this effective autonomous behavior, vehicles will need to communicate with other vehicles as well as the infrastructure around them. To achieve this, autonomous vehicles will have to travel on the roads in platoons. It has been studied that when a platoon of vehicles exists, traffic jams decrease significantly. So communication within vehicles on the square...... middle of paper ......vehicle communication. It identifies bus routes to determine high connectivity areas for transmission. It uses signals from different cars and buses to determine traffic conditions on different streets to calculate anchor routes. It also gives weights to streets based on their capacity. With this information, this protocol can help visualize the traffic situation around the city. [BLU 03] (Diab, 328) is a clustering algorithm. Group selection is based on car mobility, driver behavior and distance between cars. This protocol is designed in a way to improve scalability.[LOC 03] (Diab, 328) is a reactive routing protocol, which means that it displays the path selected by the driver. Using the city map, this protocol is based on geographic location. This protocol falls into the category of routing using topology.
