Sylvia lives in the township of Alexandra, without a mother or father to protect or comfort her. On the other hand, Nameurena lives in a private house with her family just outside Alexandra, where she enjoys luxuries she could never have had if apartheid was still in force. Therefore, the two black South African girls clearly demonstrate distinctive individual development and identity. Although the Afrikaner government has long been overthrown, apartheid is still not over for thousands of black South Africans living in poverty; It is therefore vital for young students to maintain their own individuality. Before watching the National Geographic documentary “Children of Apartheid,” I did not realize that even after the government was run by a black majority, many black people were still living in deficit. After watching this short but evocative documentary, I now understand the immense divide between many black people and how events in their lives have completely changed their situation, and how this is associated with the creation of their identity. Sylvia has various attitudes, perceptions, values ​​and beliefs. which reflect the conditions in which she lives.
