    Civilizations have created large-scale and permanent social changes in human society. The most important thing to know is that there are eight characteristics that define a civilization. The eight key aspects are undoubtedly what have made humans a very orderly civilization. Without the eight advances of civilization, we would not be what we are today. If you examine the history of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China, you will discover a variety of functions and importance that created early civilizations. As you read, you will understand how to define and what plays a role in creating a civilization. You may think that there are many important functions that define a civilization, but one of the eight achievements that truly define it are cities. All civilizations had to start with cities. Cities rose along river valleys, which was extremely important because these rivers provided major assistance to them. Rivers flooded and left behind rich soil, perfect for irrigation. These towns served as administrative centers. Cities allow people to live together in groups and everyone contributes in one way or another. Although the people were different, they still helped and played an extremely important role in building a civilization. Another characteristic is a government or rulers. It is a political system based on the control of a defined territory. A city-state is an independent state consisting of a city, its surrounding population centers and agricultural areas, with its own government. With the development of agriculture, a huge competition for resources began. Civilizations were able to maintain control by establishing a strong central government.
