Discrimination against women has existed throughout the world since almost the dawn of time. Since 1972, the United States of America has passed a law called Title IX, which has significantly improved women's rights. Title IX states: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination in any educational or training program." an activity benefiting from federal financial assistance. » (Office) Within a college/university or any federally funded program, Title IX is enforced. Women must be treated equally and have the opportunity to participate in all activities offered to men. Title IX has changed women's lives in positive ways through changes that have affected many women attending college or university. Schools must allow women in all classes offered, but for sports it's a little different. The school must provide the same number of opportunities for women's sports as for men's sports. Some said it would cause schools to cut some men's sports to allow equal numbers. “Overall, men’s sports opportunities since the passage of Title IX have increased,” the Women’s Sports Foundation said. Many say it's unfair to take away some of men's athletics, but is it fair that women don't have the same opportunities that men do? Title IX is not just about athletic equality; it is also present in classrooms and on college or university campuses. Several main issues improved by Title IX are sexual harassment, equality in the classroom, equality in extracurricular activities, and women's self-confidence.
