  • Essay / The meaning of work: the variety of motivators

Life is a constant battleground where people are born to adapt and strive in their daily work. Although most people agree that work is an essential part of their lives, they tend to have varying motivations for their different careers. Some people work because it allows them to feed and house themselves. For example, in many poor families, uneducated members perform all kinds of hard work to support their family's financial needs. Another group of people work because they want to contribute to their society. In his essay “Unforgettable Miss Bessie,” Carl T. Rowan describes his memorable high school teacher, Miss Bessie, an interesting and dedicated teacher who guides many poor students to discover their potential and achieve career success. Miss Bessie's constant efforts successfully encourage her students to strive to achieve their dreams through education. In his essay “Workers,” Richard Rodriguez asserts that his skin color has no effect on his professional career, because his long education prepares him to fight for his personal rights. Through his experience working in small summer jobs, Rodriguez meets Mexican workers who remain calm in the face of their unfair treatment. However, he also knows that he is different from them even though they share the same skin color. Overall, many people strive to pursue their careers for different reasons, such as the responsibility to provide for their family, the desire to contribute to the welfare of society, and the desire to achieve their dreams. Sometimes people just work to earn money to provide a more comfortable life for their families. Even though their current job may not be their dream job, they still work for the salary they earn. In the essay “Workers,” Rodriguez mentions a gr...... middle of paper ......s. This summer, I returned to China and visited my track teammates from my elementary school. I was surprised when some of them told me that they had decided to attend sports schools. In fact, none of them became real athletes, but they say sports have always been their greatest interest. That is why they want to work in all fields related to sports, even without the support of their families. Ultimately, work is like a basic unit of life. A person who has worked in the same job all their life does not necessarily like that job. In fact, people work for different reasons, including their family, their society or even themselves. The first material thing a person receives after working is his salary, but money alone cannot define a job. Some people really enjoy working. Additionally, work brings purpose to life.
