Sleep deprivation (SD) is a common phenomenon experienced by many people in different professions. [3] These occupations include healthcare, security, and night shift drivers. Pilcher and Huffcutt found that total and partial SD had detrimental effects on human functioning. [2] Researchers concluded that sleep deprivation affects an individual's cognitive performance[1,2], motor performance, and mood. [2]One of the effects studied is the reduction in cognitive performance. Impairments in cognitive performance may manifest as decreased attention and alertness.
