Essay / Sherman Alexie: The Absolutely True Diary of a...
To be unwanted, neglected, unloved and forgotten by everyone, even your own family, is a poverty far greater than that of a person who has nothing to eat. Like the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie is about an Indian boy, Arnold Spirit, born on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Wellpinit with brain damage. Arnold takes us on his journey and teaches us how absolutely horrible and devastating poverty is and it affects not an individual but an entire community. This condition leads to senseless death. They never had the chance to be anything other than poor, desperate Indians. If they stop dreaming of being poor and start looking for hope and try to live up to high expectations and accept more from them. They will look forward to their future with enthusiasm and confidence and begin to achieve more of what they have ever imagined. They will thus benefit from better living conditions. Throughout the novel, we learn of Arnold's fight for a better life. He inspires us and gives us hope. He goes to Reardan where white people live in search of hope. There he makes new white friends and changes their ideas about Indians. Another inspiration we see in this book is Mary Spirit, Arnold's older sister, who leaves her reservation to follow her dream. She goes to Montana, gets married, and begins to focus more on writing her romance novels rather than the reservations' opinions. Therefore, Arnold and Mary's decision is that they are not simply Indians or whites, but human beings belonging to many tribes. First, we see Arnold fighting for a better life. Through all the problems, he faces medical issues, as well as stutters and lisps that have allowed him to communicate well with others... middle of paper ...... it's easy . But that's no reason to give up. Keep your hopes alive and you'll be surprised what you can accomplish if only you can put your mind to it. Because after all, you only live once, so why not try to make the most of it. Once again, Sherman Alexie shows us in his book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, how the entire Spokane reservation faces poverty, but Arnold and Mary Spirit fight for a better life. It goes over all the problems the characters face in the book and how some choose to live in horrible conditions for the rest of their lives, but some keep their hopes alive and do their best to break the cycle. Therefore, learn to never give up on your dreams and always hope. Hope makes the present moment less difficult to bear. No matter how hard life can be, if you only hope that tomorrow will be better, it won't be.
