Essay / Dr. Richard Fuller Sparknotes - 1107
Fuller states: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, that the man of God be perfect. , fully equipped for all good works” (171). Fuller uses this argument to suggest that the theological way of thinking about Old Testament slavery is acceptable. The reason stated above is that all of God's word comes from God; the use of slaves in the Old Testament can therefore be used by southern plantation owners today. Later in his letter he describes how Old Testament slaves were more or less destitute servants, who worked for seven years for a particular person, then were freed and eventually even given a wife. This is where it can be argued that Fuller loses his argument for Old Testament slavery, because he does not argue for the correct type of slavery. Destitute servants actually have a chance of becoming free one day, once the fixed contractual period has expired. Slaves on a Southern plantation have no hope of ever being freed and realize that they will most likely live on the plantation until they die. It can be seen that Fuller's way of thinking with the Old Testament could have failed with his argument that servants were servants.
