Essay / The Giving Tree has a Son Written by Tim Lopez: Giving...
The lyrics of Tim Lopez's song from Plain White T, The Giving Tree, strike a chord with many who have been in a relationship and given everything to them without receiving it in return. The song concerns many people in relationships or even friendships. The relationship with the song can vary between ages and sexes. Someone can't invest so much into a relationship and get almost nothing in return, until they eventually break down and leave. Tim Lopez was inspired by a children's book by Shel Silverstein, The Giving Tree, which was about the relationship between a boy and a tree. Tim Lopez wrote this song about his one-sided relationship where he gave everything with little to nothing in return. I can personally relate this song to my past relationship with a guy of 2 years. We had a lot of tough times when we were together. There were things in the relationship that I could never erase; Yet, I feel like I'll never completely let him go. He always tries very hard to get me back and I take advantage of it. I have a lot of mixed emotions about him and the idea of starting the relationship again. The hardest part is that he is the only person with whom I truly feel I can be completely myself. Yet I fear it will start again where it left off. All he wants is to be my generous tree and make me happy. Just like in the song, I find myself trying to move forward, but end up feeling empty and return to him. I know my fear and mixed emotions are draining him of everything he has. This song touches me in so many ways and makes me feel horrible. I don't want to intentionally cause pain to anyone, especially someone I care about. He's so sure of what he wants, but our past keeps me from knowing what I want. I do... middle of paper ...... back. I identify with this song from a past relationship where I gave little to nothing in return. This song is an inspiration to me and I love the story behind the story. Tim had two inspirations when writing this song, the book itself and a past relationship of his own. Tim Lopez and his band The Plain White T's have produced many albums and they are a stunning band. Everyone, of all ages and genders, can relate to this song.
