Essay / Is there something special between religion and zoos?
Religion can be defined as a set of beliefs that man accepts to show his faith in God. Religion also acts as a guard to fight against all evils in life. The book The Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, is a story that focuses on the central theme of religion. The story's protagonist, Pi Patel, practices three different religions throughout the book. Religions practiced by Pi include Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. Muslims who practice Islam believe in the existence of a single god named Allah. Likewise, Christians also believe in a supreme god, named Jesus Christ. People who practice Hinduism believe in more than one god. These three religions are similar in that they call for good morals and good conduct. Pi also believes that religion acts as a protector, as the quote “Religion will save us” makes clear (Martel, 2002, p. 299). Pi's enduring faith and knowledge of religion or God allows him to survive the various obstacles he faces in the lifeboat. The recurring sequence between different types of religions may be the impulse to believe in something. Throughout my childhood until today, I have always loved going to the zoo to see the different species of animals. The beautiful sounds made by each animal are remarkably pleasant to hear. In fact, sometimes I feel like I could stay all night listening to these animals. However, I wonder if it is right to confine animals to zoos or if it is a lack of protection. Religious practices within Yann Martel's Life of Pi develop as secure places, like zoos, where practitioners, like animals, are both incarcerated and protected. By exploring three different religions, Pi is able to escape confinement...... middle of paper ......s. Knowing that Pi follows and practices three different religions, does he really believe in them? Or is he an enthusiastic follower? Works Cited Martel, Y. (2002). Life of Pi: A novel.
