  • Essay / Career Plan: Radiological Technology - 1139

The career I chose to pursue is radiological technology. I have been interested in x-rays for some time. At first, a simple photo of a broken wrist piqued my interest. It was magnificent. The advanced technology that allows us to see the inside of the human body without exploratory surgery for diagnosis amazed me. As I delved deeper into this career, I discovered how fascinating this field is. Not only are the images helpful in finding loose fragments and putting a bone back into place, but x-ray images can show pneumonia, cancer and even heart failure. According to the career assessment test of interests and skills, my best scores are: arts, audio-video technology, communications and human services. According to a work values test, what is most important to me is having variety and a sense of accomplishment in my chosen field of work. If I relied on these results alone, I would be an excellent radiology technologist. The nature of the work of radiologic technologists involves many tasks. Often called radiologists, they take x-rays of the human body to make a diagnosis. Technicians remove jewelry and explain procedures, as well as position the patient to be x-rayed appropriately. Lead shields are worn to prevent unnecessary exposure to radiation, but technicians are also required to follow strict regulations regarding the use of radiation in order to protect their patients and co-workers. Additionally, radiologic technologists maintain equipment and patient records (Bureau of Labor Statistics). There are certain skills one must possess to be an effective technologist, including active listening, speaking to others to convey information effectively, critical thinking, reading comprehension, and working environment document......
