    Is Society Creating Unrealistic Beauty Standards? By: Ameena Have you ever felt self-conscious about your appearance? 8 out of 10 people do it. I think the reason is that society creates unrealistic beauty standards. People try every day to starve, hide their imperfections, and achieve the beauty standards created by society, and some even give up. Today I'm going to talk to you about how children's media, models/celebrities, and magazines have created these unrealistic beauty standards. Let's start with Barbie dolls. Many young girls grow up playing with Barbie dolls. Have you ever thought about the body image that the doll promotes? If she were a real person, she would have so much less body fat that she wouldn't be able to get her period or even walk straight; she should crawl. How unrealistic is that!? Studies have shown that girls ages 5 to 8 who have been introduced to Barbie are much more conscious of their weight than girls who haven't been. A recent survey also reveals that almost 50% of fourth graders have already started...
