  • Essay / How Crime Affects Society - 551

In the United States, there is dispute over how people of different races and backgrounds are treated differently by the criminal justice and law enforcement systems. For example, in the United States, which houses 25% of the world's prison population, 1 million out of 2.3 million prisoners are African-American. On death row, the majority of offenders are white, and many people believe this is because these states are “compensating” for past discrimination against black people. This idea, however, could easily be dismissed if the company researched this topic itself. The majority of offenders on death row are serious offenders, mostly men, who enjoy a high position in society and the majority of these men are white. Regardless of an offender's race, age, or background, they are mostly treated the same in court and are sentenced based on their criminal acts, nothing.
