    Mental Disorders Many illnesses and disorders can affect the human mind. Some of them are serious, while others are minor and may not even be noticed. Some of the disorders and illnesses covered in this report are delirium, dementia, and schizophrenia, along with a discussion of the specific symptoms and treatments available for the different disorders. A mental illness is defined as any illness that affects the mind, thoughts, emotions, personality or behavior. With any mental illness, as with a physical illness, there are symptoms that help identify when a person is suffering from a mental disorder or illness. Some of the most common symptoms of these disorders include extreme moods, sadness, anxiety, and the inability to think clearly or remember well. Just because a person experiences some of these symptoms does not mean they have a disease. Almost everyone, at some point in their life, will be unable to think clearly or will be in a bad mood. These characteristics are simply part of human nature and are most likely just a passing mood that will disappear in a few moments. A diagnosis of mental illness may be necessary if symptoms appear so often that they interfere with the person's daily life. A surprisingly high number of Americans suffer from mental illness, approximately 43% of the total U.S. population. Although most are not serious, approximately 3% of the U.S. population suffers from a mental illness that can be classified as serious. This small population will need treatment to relieve or cure their illness. Treatment of mental illnesses can either be handled with medication or under the care of a psychiatrist. The treatment a patient receives depends on the type of mental illness as well as the severity of their situation. In conclusion, it is obvious that mental illness is a serious illness. It is important for a person experiencing symptoms, such as those associated with different types of mental illness, to seek appropriate medical treatment. Having a mental illness is an illness and should not be associated with a specific weakness in an individual.
