  • Essay / My Journey Through Literacy - 1717

Knowledge is literacy, and literacy is the ability to improve your vocabulary, read and hear the literacy stories of others, and continue to live yours. I'd like to start explaining my literacy story by saying that my first word was "mom." Although I don't remember it, my first word was very exciting to my parents because I communicated primarily through my older brother, David, until I was almost three years old. Even though David is my only brother and he is three years older than me, we have always been close. He told my parents everything I wanted even though I didn't know how to speak yet. Although it took me a while to learn to speak, my parents always read me stories and encouraged me to speak before and as soon as I started learning. Growing up, my parents read me a story almost every night. I remember a big book filled with classic fairy tale stories like Hansel and Gretel and The Little Old Lady Who Lived in a Shoe. My favorite series of stories was Little Creatures. Each story had something I could relate to, like bath time and shopping with mom. However, my favorite story was a simple story called “All About Cats.” I liked this story because my favorite pet has always been cats, and this story was simple enough that I could memorize all the words. When my brother started going to school, I was always intrigued by the homework he sent home. His teachers sent him simple things like letter boards to trace with a dry erase marker, or small books with chunks of words to pronounce. Seeing David's homework and having a growing interest in going to school myself, I often looked forward to David coming home so we could play school on our porch. David would bring a gray paper to the middle......ollege, because I am enthusiastic about learning new subjects, just as I am able to sign up to attend classes with information that I am interested. At the beginning of this article, I explained the process I followed to learn to speak. Literacy is not just about reading and writing experiences, it is much more than that. My literacy story has been enriched by my interests, my experiences, and my life. During my high school years, I always found myself taking care of children, whether in school or babysitting. I have found that I work well with younger children and it is amazing to see how they learn. It also always interested me as I reflected on my own life. Therefore, my literacy story continues as my interests have grown not only from adventure and animals, but also towards children and my future teaching career..
