Essay / Comparison between Nancy Farmer's book, The House of the Scorpion and James Dashner's book, The Labyrinth
What makes an evil plan truly evil? Is this the number of people injured? Or is it the quality of your harm? The House of the Scorpion is a novel about Matt, a young clone man, living in a dystopian society under the control of a terrible drug lord who plans to harvest Matt's organs. The Maze Runner is the story of a teenager named Thomas, who wakes up in the middle of a maze with little to no memory. Although their basic plots showed distinctly different ideas, further investigation shows an astonishing resemblance. Both The Scorpion House and The Labyrinth differ in their characters and setting; however, similarities shared in the same places. Say no to plagiarism. El Patron of The House of the Scorpion, drug lord and creator of eejits, and Chancellor Ava Paige of the Maze Runner, leader of WCKD, have both similarities and differences. The two characters are both evil and at the head of a villainous plan. In House of the Scorpion, El Patron devised a plan to turn illegal immigrants into slaves simply with an obedience chip implanted in their brains. Ava placed innocent teenagers in a giant maze with grieving robotic creatures, into which a device was inserted that told the creature what to do. However, at the end of The Maze Runner, Ava shot herself in the head and made a shocking recovery, but at the end of The House of the Scorpion, El Patron dies of heart failure. Even though both men did equally bad things, only El Patron died. The setting of The Maze Runner is similar to that of The Scorpion House, but they are not quite the same. Although neither stated the precise time they took place, we can conclude that they are set in the future. (The events of The Maze Runner and The House of the Scorpion are not something you would see in modern day and are not part of our past.) Near the end of The Maze Runner, it reveals that their lands have been burned. by the sun. On the other hand, in The House of the Scorpion, Opium continues, proving that their lands would live for many more years.
