Essay / Femininity in Early and Middle English Literature
Femininity is presented in this case through the eyes of a man, which can lead to some inaccuracies and biases. This is made clear in the warning given in the Prologue, as the miller asks the reader to "hold me harmless" so that he will not be held responsible for events included in the tale that might cause anger or upset in some people. In terms of structure, Old English texts show a narrator – whether in the first or third person – who believes that his version of events is accurate and trustworthy by readers. However, The Miller's Tale and the inclusion of a prologue in particular indicate that the narrator is telling the story in an extremely subjective manner, which is why Alison is portrayed as an unreliable character. One of the problems with subjective storytelling is the impact it can have on the reader, as it makes women and femininity as a whole appear to be a fatal weakness and something that men should seek to avoid.
