  • Essay / Karl Marx and Durkheim - 2731

Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim are considered the founding fathers of sociology and both had a profound influence on the development of sociology. However, some may say they have very different views on society. Although there are differences in views between the two, one remarkable thing is that Marx and Durkheim shared the same concern regarding society and its development. They were both particularly concerned with the rise of the modern system of division of labor and the evolution of market society that was taking place in the realm of modern capitalism. Both approached these developments by introducing their own theory to highlight the effects of modern capitalism on solidarity and on the capacity of society to reproduce itself. Even more, it was about understanding and solving the problems that arose as the societies in which they lived moved from a pre-industrial to an industrial state. For Marx, one of the serious problems that arose in this context was what he called alienation. On the other hand, for Durkheim, it was what he called anomie. The purpose of this essay is to examine the underlying differences between these two notions and in the hope that it can help us better understand the different visions of society developed by these two great social thinkers. First of all, we start from Marx's idea of alienation. Second, what anomie means to Durkheim. Next, a comparison will be made on the two concepts, evaluating the similarities and differences between the two. Finally, we will finally come to conclude how the concept of alienation differs from the concept of anomie. In Marx's early works, he spoke of man's alienation from his own essence. He then discussed alienation as the experience of isolation resulting from helplessness when he wrote ...... middle of paper ...... apply or have a productive life unless of being guided by a set of invisible norms and regulations, an invisible hand of society. In conclusion, Marx and Durkheim were both extraordinary thinkers and theorists of their time. Both of their theories provided insight into our society by examining our society and its crucial elements at a deeper level. Alienation is therefore the breakdown of interdependence in society imposed by the structure of society which is, for Marx, an important part of life. Well, at least in an ideal sense. Anomie is defined as a state reached when society is marked by uncontrolled economic progress. Although Marx and Durkheim approached the question of modern society in different analytical ways, there is one thing that is indisputable: it has greatly influenced sociology today and maintains a level of truth as well as value for the future..
