Essay / Masculinity in Hip Hop Culture - 956
Certain ideals such as hypersexuality, material possessions, and hegemonic masculinity found in hip hop certainly highlight some of its negative aspects. Hip-hop, in a sense, can sometimes promote feminism in the sense of sexual freedom (at least in the lyrics provided), where some songs condemn women for the same freedoms. It is suggested that many young people, especially black young people, are beginning to monitor and disrupt some of the messages and ideals being espoused/followed. Personally, the ideals of much of hip-hop do not reflect my own values or views on femininity or masculinity, even though I listen to most of the music. As a young, educated black man, I can, in a sense, see through most of the gimmicks and fads that music represents and stay true to my personal values most of the time. That said, there are times when I find myself reciting lyrics or espousing the same negative ideals that I personally don't believe in because maybe I like a song. This is where education and awareness comes in and I am able to recognize and correct my behavior, which I would like to see become more popular among those close to me.
