Essay / Heroic Qualities of Odysseus by Homer - 1092
Two minutes before the bomb explodes. A nuclear bomb in his own cave, powerful enough to destroy the entire city, and only two minutes to decide his fate. He has two options: either leave the city and escape on his mobile bat, or find a way to save the city. As a true hero would, Batman chooses the second path. In Dark Knight Rises, Batman exemplifies the makeup of a true hero who uses his intelligence, courage, and wisdom to save his people. He may have been portrayed with a glamorous look and an incredible costume, but on the inside, he maintained the makeup of a true hero. But what does this have to do with the Odyssey? The hero of Homer's novel was Odysseus. He proved to be an archetypal hero through his great wisdom, wit and courage unmatched by other Greek heroes. One of Odysseus' heroic qualities was wisdom. He used his wisdom and experience as a leader both in battles and on expeditions. When he arrived in foreign lands, he sent only a few members of his crew to explore. He did this so he could explore the earth without losing all of his crew members. On several occasions, he lost crew members during expeditions: “[...] We followed your orders... My men let out a shout to attract his attention. In an instant she came out, opened the polished doors and invited us inside. Not knowing what was going on, my men followed her en masse into the house. But I stayed where I was, because I thought maybe it was a trap. And now the whole party is gone. Not a single man showed up [...] (162). Keeping people with him demonstrated a sense of wisdom and experience that comes from a true hero, a true leader. Another example of his wisdom was his failure to inform his crew about Charybdis and Scylla. If he had told them, his team… in the middle of a paper… would have done it! (12.772-75). In this dramatic speech from Odysseus, he rallies his men as all great leaders and heroes do. Courage is one of the true characteristics of heroes, and Odysseus displays this trait perfectly. Odysseus's wit, wisdom, and courage make him a true hero, but Homer's novel indicates that wit trumps all. Throughout his journey home, his spirit contributed most to his survival and escape. Whether against the Cyclops or killing the suitors upon his return to Ithica, Orysseus used his intelligence and cunning to his greatest advantage. Despite all the obstacles Odysseus encountered on his journey, he used his intelligence to prove himself by finding solutions to achieve his goal and reunite with his family and his kingdom. The Odyssey is a wonderful story because it shows that a true hero is not just costumes, good looks and treasures, but so much more inside..
