  • Essay / Employee Empowerment Essay - 710

Research has shown that empowerment helps create an environment that encourages employees to work together for the common good instead of competing for power and resources. It also allows employees to be forward-thinking and innovative in solving obstacles or problems and enriching the overall customer experience; productivity and quality are higher and quantifiable. Nordstrom department stores are a success story in employee empowerment with their no-questions-asked return policy that allows employees to provide full refunds to customers when returning merchandise. This policy embraces the “Nordstrom Way” which includes a rule that states “Use good judgment in all situations. There will be no additional rules” (Spector & McCarthy, 2012). In my opinion, this rule sums up the philosophy of employee empowerment. Empowerment has been shown to have a significant impact on a company's bottom line, its employees, and its customers, who experience a greater sense of satisfaction with the services and products they receive. It is for these reasons that I argue that employee empowerment is a positive agent of change. Wouldn't it be inspiring to see all organizations embrace and achieve their employee goals?
