In the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Jane lived a miserable life from her childhood, until she met Edward Rochester. Experiencing a miserable childhood after the death of her parents, Jane had to live with her aunt and cousins. Mrs. Reed hated and resented her because she was aware of the love the late Mr. Reed had for Jane. On his deathbed, he asked Mrs. Reed to care for Jane as if she were her own child. This angered Mrs. Reed because her last words were addressed to Jane rather than to her, Mrs. Reed, or their children. Jane took all the pain and neglect she felt and finally told Mrs. Reed and the Reed children how she felt. Jane was soon placed in a boarding school called Lowood. At Lowood, the headmaster of the school, Mr Brocklehurst, mistreated the children. She lived there miserably until she met another student named Helen Burns and a teacher named Miss Temple. They both helped her through her years at Lowood.
