Essay / Google is a search engine - 834
We live in a world fundamentally run by the Internet. We use it every day, many times and in many ways. We use it to keep up with the latest news, watch movies and shows, listen to music, do research for our latest assignment, and even just search for the latest topic our mind wanders to. Google is here to help you with all of this. Google is a search engine created in September 1998 by two doctoral students. students at Stanford University (Google, 2014). According to the Stanford University web page, Google started with just forty gigabytes which were all saved on a hard drive made from Legos, this hard drive is now on display at the University. Due to the small storage that Google started with, their site only had twenty-six million pages, that may seem like a lot, but it's nothing compared to the thirty trillion (Statistic Brain, 2014) that Google had in 2014 .Some people think that Google has limited our learning and does not allow us to learn in the usual way. An article published by The Atlantic went viral in 2008. Nicholas Carr wrote this article which basically said that he felt like online search engines were giving him a temporary education that would disappear when his mind moved on to the next thought . “It’s clear that users aren’t reading online in the traditional sense; indeed, there are signs that new forms of “reading” are emerging as users “navigate” horizontally through titles, content pages, and summaries in an effort to win quickly. It almost seems like they're going online to avoid reading in the traditional sense. (Carr, 2008). This is not true. Google gives us the opportunity to learn things that, without advances in this technology, could... middle of paper ... thanks for that. This is now how our world works, we are able to quickly search for information and form new ideas through this site. The way our world learns is changing and we all need to adapt to this new way. If some suspect Google of making us stupid, it is only because we are not all adapted to this new learning technique. We are fortunate to have everything we are looking for at our fingertips, but because we have a large amount of information so easily accessible, we must be able to absorb the information that is given to us. Google cannot become a temporary source of quick information that is thrown away as soon as our thinking changes, it is a learning tool that allows us to know and do more. It makes our lives easier and frees up time for the most important things in life, experiences..
