Essay / The 1900s: Roller Coasters as the Turn of the Century fought massive adversity and transformed the world for the better. According to the Time article The 1900 Galveston Hurricane, “This storm killed an estimated 8,000 Americans and leveled what had been the largest city in Texas” (Ripley 1). This quote refers to the deadliest hurricane ever to hit the United States. As a relatively new nation, it was an absolutely tragic and horrible start to the century. Despite the loss of precious lives and the weakening morale of the American people, the patriotic impetus for exploration and innovation has only grown stronger. Just three years later, two proud brothers made what is probably one of the most important and world-changing inventions. “On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright piloted the first powered airplane 20 feet above a windswept beach in North Carolina” (“Eyewitness to History” 1). This historic day in the town of Kitty Hawk marked the beginning of a new era. Thanks to this wonderful invention and vast technological advancements, people can travel abroad at an exponentially faster rate. This has truly put America back where it belongs, as a true global leader in innovation. Although this marked enormous progress for the country in this decade, it has not yet been done. “On September 7, 1909, readers of The New York Times woke up to a stunning front-page headline: 'Peary Discovers North Pole After Eight Tries in 23 Years'” (Henderson 1). American scholar Robert Peary used his spirit of exploration and combined it with hard work to achieve a miracle.
