Essay / Business Ethics: Avco Environmental - 914
For my article, I chose the case of Avco Environmental. The case is fictitious and can be found on the businessethics.ca website linked to in prezi. The facts of the case are that Chantale Leroux, a clerk at Avco Environmental Services, a toxic waste disposal company, found evidence that Avco might be disposing of medical waste in the local municipal landfill. I think this case violates seven of the ten main traps and eight of the ten prima facie duties. By reading the case, you can separate Chantale, the person, from the company Avco Environmental and see who violated which traps. Looking at the top ten traps in Hoyk and Hersey's book, seven of the ten traps were the cause of ethical failure. The first trap is obedience to authority. In this case, if Chantale chooses not to call her friend who works for the newspaper, for fear of repercussions at work, then she listens to the directives of her superiors and remains silent about the situation. Chantale could be indirectly responsible for what might happen if certain medical waste threatened public safety, for example by polluting a local water source. Another trap that accompanies vicarious liability would be that of faceless victims, in which the company does not see a specific person or group of people being affected, rather than the trap indicating that it is a faceless person without feelings of guilt or remorse. Competition, tyranny Goals and money are three other traps violated in this matter. The competition has more to do with the company than with Chantale the person. Chantale can understand why her superiors want to ignore the situation, because they are a small company and in competition with larger companies they would not be able to...... middle of paper... .. as long as the inspections/audits were completely random and only the most senior management knew about the reports, so employees could feel like they were constantly being monitored and not participating in wrongdoing . A hotline sent to an outside source is also a good tool for monitoring any wrongdoing and gives the whistleblower a guarantee of anonymity. The final tool that could help Avco prevent future problems is to organize regular outings within the company where employees could see where the waste was going and how it was being disposed of correctly and doing the right thing. , they preserved the environment. and the environment: the case of Avco Environmental www.businessethics.ca/cases/wb-env1.html (March 29, 2010).
