Essay / Symbolism in Everyday Use by Alice Walker - 1209
When an object is expressed or represented by different ideas, it is called symbolism. Symbolism is used throughout. For example, symbolism is used in physics when you have this equation W=Fxd. The letter W represents the amount of work done by the force, F represents the force exerted on the object when it is moving, and d represents the distance the object travels while the force acts on it. Another example is the traffic light, each light symbolizes something, red means stop, yellow means caution and green means go. Symbolism can also exist in sport, for example in football, when the referee gives you a red card, it symbolizes that you are out of the game because you have committed a foul. In the short story Mama Johnson and Maggie wait for Dee in the front yard. . Dee had gone to school in Augusta and this was her first time visiting them. When Dee arrives, Mama Johnson is surprised because Dee tells her that she changed her name to Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo. While Mama Johnson and Maggie think Dee has come to visit, Dee just wants to acquire family heirlooms that are suitable for artwork. The conflict began when Dee wanted to take quilts that had been quilted by Grandma Dee and Big Dee. Mama Johnson disagrees with Dee because she promised Maggie the quilts for her wedding. In "Everyday Use", Alice Walker uses symbolism to show how important culture and family history are to Mama Johnson and Maggie. The characters in the story are an example of symbolism. Mama Johnson is the mother of Dee and Maggie. Alice Walker describes Mama Johnson as "a big-boned, rough-handed, hard-working woman." Mama Johnson is symbolized as a true representation of heritage. According to Julie...... middle of paper ...... things and family history were, she just wanted the things for artwork. Mama Johnson and Maggie were a true representation of their family and culture.
