The head of my bed was near the door, and I thought at first that the laughing goblin was standing by my side, or rather crouching by my pillow: but I got up, looked around me, and saw nothing; while, as I looked, the unnatural sound repeated itself: and I knew it came from behind the panels. My first movement was to get up and tighten the bolt; and it's my turn to shout again: who is there? (155) Jane said, “Something was gurgling and moaning. Soon steps retreated up the gallery towards the third floor staircase: a door had recently been made to close this staircase; I heard it open and close and everything was quiet.
