Essay / The needs of indigenous peoples and young people in Canada...
Did you know that in 2006, the number of indigenous people in Canada exceeded one million? This means that indigenous people represented 3.8% of the total population of Canada. Although this number is much smaller than the non-Indigenous population, they have an impact on Canada, both north and south. Unfortunately, some indigenous groups do not have a stable way of life and the Canadian government is very selective when helping them. Overall, I want to be able to help First Nations people receive the funding they need to have a thriving economic workforce. First, indigenous peoples do not have enough jobs and educational buildings to support the large youth population. Nearly half of Canada's indigenous people are under the age of 24, so they will need more positions to be able to work and go to school. In 2011, only 10% of natives had a university degree and about 20% had a college degree. This poses a problem for First Nations members who are aiming for medium-paid employment. If they don't have a diploma, it is more difficult for them to find a job that they like and that pays well. Some indigenous students studying at university or colleges cannot do their best or cannot attend because they are caring for their families. The government should find a sustainable way to give money to these students so they can go to school in hopes of getting a good job. For younger children, it is not always possible to stay in school. If they do not complete primary or secondary school, their education will be delayed and they will not be able to compete in today's economy. The government should encourage more schooling and build more schools on reserves so that native people can... middle of paper ... government has no right to try to change this. They have given opportunities to indigenous people who do not fit their culture and the Canadian government must respect that. If indigenous groups choose to remain on reserves, this should not pose a problem for the government. What the government should do is provide them with fertile land and better health care. They should provide resources that benefit Indigenous people and are very similar to those that benefit non-Indigenous people. In conclusion, I believe that non-natives and natives should be treated equally and fairly. The Canadian government should strive to provide quality education, jobs, health care and appropriate funds. Older cohorts of the Indigenous population are much smaller than younger cohorts, changing the needs and demands of Indigenous peoples..
